1998 I recorded the number of hits on the Classics front page and the
number of hits on the site as a whole. Neither of these are entirely
satisfactory measures of the amount of use the site gets. Many people link to
particular documents within the site, and thereby bypass the front page
entirely when using the site. By contrast, the number of hits on the whole site
records the total number of files (including graphics) accessed, which
over-estimates the use of the site (because a text document containing, say,
two graphic files gets recorded as three hits). Changes to the York University
web server, however, made it possible for me to record the number of individual
"pages" (or documents) that are requested each day. This is a better
measure than either the number of front page hits or whole site hits, and I
decided to switch to this measure for 1999. In order to maintain some
continuity with past statistics, however, I continued during that year to
record the number of hits on the whole site as well. As of January 2000, only
page hits are recorded.

include combined totals from the York and ASU sites from this point forward.
