Research Methods

Micro Experimental Lab (MEL)
MEL generates computer-controlled laboratory experiments in the social and behavioral sciences. Students design an experiment by filling in "forms" which describe the sequence of events in an experiment. MEL can handle almost any experiment that can be run on a computer.

MEL is powerful and flexible enough to be used in professional research applications. It guides the student researcher in preparing instructions for subjects and in organizing stimuli; it controls timing, the presentation of stimuli, and the collection of responses during the experiment. It also provides summary analyses of the data and can export the data to major statistical packages including SAS and SPSS.

MEL comes with a comprehensive tutorial package which steps you through the process of creating and running experiments. There is also a library of over 30 basic experiments which can be used as a starting point for student projects. Guidelines for learning and using MEL in the computer lab are contained in the document Using MEL in the Computer Lab.

MEL LAB
A student edition of MEL for use in undergraduate and graduate introductory and research methods courses. The student workbook describes over 20 experiments in perception, cognition, social psychology and human factors. Each chapter reviews the literature, describes the experiment and suggests extensions of the experiment. Most of these experiments are more polished versions of the experiments included in the SAMPLE library of the full MEL system.

Statistical Software

Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) and AMOS Draw
  • AMOS estimates models for factor analysis and structural equations sometimes called "LISREL" models. AMOS is designed for teaching purposes and is much easier to use than LISREL.

  • AMOS Draw allows you to construct and estimate a model visually (by a path diagram).

    APL
    A Programming Language

    MYSTAT for Windows
Student Release of Mystat. Used by several undergraduate courses.

    SPSS for Windows
A Windows version of the SPSS package, containing the following statistical procedures:
    • Nonparametric tests
    • Frequencies
    • ANOVA
    • Crosstabs
    • Regression
    • Means
    • Plots
    • Correlations
